An Option to Allow Being Mentioned
This isn't rejected. I'm suggesting an option to allow getting mentioned in comments.
–
It's a pretty simply concept. Somewhere in Account Settings, you can select an option labeled: “Allow ping”, or something along the lines of this. (mockup needed). When on, if someone pings you, you will recive a message saying “Pinged by -user-”, or something along those lines. (mockup needed). On your profile page, somewhere easily viewable to users, it will say “This user has ping enabled”, or something along those lines. (mockup needed). If the user does not have ping enabled, it won't say anything. When you first join Scratch, the option is off by default. Many the different ways spam will be avoided can be found here. And, you will only be pinged for the comment. Not the number of pings in the comment.
–
Pros:
–
I say “or something along these lines…” to leave room for improvement.
Please help by making for mockups.
Please give constructive feedback!
6.3 Notification for being mentioned in commentsSee the difference?
Some users would like to be notified whenever someone mentions their username in a comment on the website. Although such an option was considered, it was not added due to the potential for spam. For instance, someone could write @Scratcher multiple times to spam that user's notifications.

Pros:
Allows for easier sharing between friends. Say someone wants their friend to see a project, said person just tags them.
Spamming wouldn't be easy. If you're getting spammed, turn it off. Abuse won't be as big an issue.Cons:
(#6)There isn't really any solution to this, unless of course the glitch was fixed. Though, how often this glitch would happen I'm not sure.@Scratch I like @ScratchCat!Hey This is a real glitch.
(#9)This is the biggest problem, as the suggestion is about avoiding spam. If any solutions are thought of please share.
I feel like this could lead to a lot of messages like “I just pinged you in a comment but you didn't respond, why don't you have pings on?”
Spam pinging. You can turn it off after, but it's still a large issue. The solution to this and other spam problems can be seen in this post.

An Option to Allow Being Mentioned
I can't see anything useful with wanting to be mentioned in comments. I wouldn't mind at all if someone said on my profile:
@k0d3rrr Someone mentioned you on this studio. But if I had this turned on, someone could easily post stuff like this on my projects/studios/profile:
@k0d3rrr @k0d3rrr @k0d3rrr @k0d3rrr @k0d3rrr @k0d3rrr @k0d3rrr @k0d3rrr @k0d3rrr @k0d3rrr @k0d3rrr @k0d3rrrYes, you could either turn off mention notifications, have mention notifications automatically off, or just report mention abuse, but those wouldn't be helpful, because these could still let the annoying spammers spam your name a billion times and flood your messages with too many mentions.

(#2)What if you only got a message for the comment, not the amount of pings in the comment? This would make spamming much harder, and you would get less messages in the time the spammer is active.

An Option to Allow Being Mentioned
(Scratcher) has already recently received a mention in this topic!
(Scratcher) disabled being mentioned.
Please don't mention the same Scratcher multiple times in a post!Or if it automatically warns when typing (or prevents):
You've already mentioned (Scratcher) in this post!
You have already recently mentioned the same Scratcher!
(Scratcher) disabled being mentioned in topics they haven't posted.
You're mentioning too much Scratchers!
Careful: Quoting (Scratcher) will mention them.Users can choose to be mentioned when their post is quoted.
(Scratcher) mentioned you in the forum thread: (Topic)It can possibly also include the message that mentioned them.

For which of these would you get a notification?
1. @DinoMaster20
2. DinoMaster20
3. @dinomaster20
Also, how would it handle this glitch?

1 and 3, as Scratch usernames are case-insensitive (e.g I can enter your profile at “/users/musicrocks013” too) For which of these would you get a notification?
Also, how would it handle this glitch?@ScratchCat wouldn't mention @Scratch. If there is no user like @ScratchCat it would straight up fail and act as a normal text.
Did you mean something else?

This is a glitch, and it would keep from mentioning “ScratchCat” because it thinks you are simply linking the user “Scratch” twice. @ScratchCat wouldn't mention @Scratch. If there is no user like @ScratchCat it would straight up fail and act as a normal text.
Did you mean something else?
Try it out this is a real glitch.

I feel like this could lead to a lot of messages like “I just pinged you in a comment but you didn't respond, why don't you have pings on?”
So you get annoying messages if you turn it on, and you get annoying messages if you turn it off. I'm not sure if there is a solution for this one, and I firmly believe Scratchers should have the option to not have to respond to a comment if they don't want to.

An Option to Allow Being Mentioned
Yeah, but people can already say stuff like that because there already are ways to send a user a comment. (Commenting on the person's profile, one of their projects, replying to one, etc.) People ask me all the time why I have comments off, and I often see other people say things to each other like “Why didn't you reply to my comment?” I don't see a difference with this. We already have the option to not have to respond to a comment if we don't want to, and I don't see how this would change it. To be honest, it'd be more annoying to have a message every time that you are mentioned. If you turn it off, you won't get the constant barrage of messages. I think that a good number of people would have it off. I also think that the people who would use it would be constantly turning it off and on multiple times due to spam.Yeah, but people can already say stuff like that because there already are ways to send a user a comment. If you attract the attention of a troll and you had it on, it would not be a pleasant experience. I know that you can simply turn it off, but what if one wants to use the ping? After the troll is gone, one would turn it back on again. After some time, it may end up being turned off due to spam, again. If one would still want to use it, turn it back on. And then, it becomes a cycle. While this certainly won't occur every time, I can see it easily becoming a cycle, to the point where a user could easily reach the conclusion that it's not worth the spam that would certainly arise from a feature such as this.
option to allow getting mentioned in comments. -snip-I wouldn't go as far as to claim that this is not rejected. More often than not, the optional counterpart is also rejected, though, I will not outright claim that this suggestion is rejected. I will, however, claim that you've not yet solved the problem that is presented by the feature, which is the high and easy notification spam that will almost certainly occur from it. How exactly could that be cut down significantly? This isn't rejected. I'm suggesting an

The exact same thing is true with comment spam. The solution is to turn them off, just like comments. It doesn't stop it I will, however, claim that you've not yet solved the problem that is presented by the feature, which is the high and easy notification spam that will almost certainly occur from it. How exactly could that be cut down significantly?before it happens, but it is a preventative measure. All of this is just like comment spam. Also, there's already been some mentioned restrictions that hopefully would cut down on spam.

An Option to Allow Being Mentioned
It's more a combination of lesser usefulness than that of the comments section and annoyance. Mentioned restrictions is simply talk, nothing as of yet has been implied to be a definitive part of the suggestion. Honestly, the two best ways to cut down on spam with the notifications are if A) you'd already get a notification, you won't get one, and B) only one notification is given per comment with a mention of your username (if a user “mentioned” your username twice in a single comment, you'd only get one notification). With these, the spam would be greatly hindered, but I will still question the usefulness of this feature, as it's really only helpful when you want to know when a user has “mentioned” you, not anytime else. The exact same thing is true with comment spam. Maybe also add a 2 minute cooldown for pings so they aren't spammed. Why would you need to ping that much anyway?

(#9)I can't think of a solution for that yet, other than just ignoring the comments. But I defiantly could see that happening.

(#5)Sounds good, but maybe get rid of the pop-ups for pinging a user with pings disabled. It would probably be better for it to just post and not do anything for drama reasons.
