I like the current one, i think it looks better as a grin. The mockup just looks like

with open eyes, and is a bit… weird looking. As if it's talking or something.

That mock-up makes me very uncomfortable. I agree that the text emoticon is probably supposed to indicate an open mouth, but having the mouth open looks really awkward and I don't see anything wrong with the current one.

It's not bad, but for some reason making it smaller reduces the resolution drastically…

This one looks a bit creepy up close and looking back, the current one doesn’t really have flaws.
