I was going to make a full length music video using an Mp4 as a sprite and it popped up a “sorry scratch was unable to load the sprite” and it set me back.
I am working on downloading the gifs and the Mp3 but can't we have Mp4 support?

I am not sure if this has been commented here before but there should be a file limit to how much space an .mp4 file would take up.
File size limit isn't enough to filter out videos. Something like this is possible:
Name Size	Duration
A video.mp4 6 GB 5 hours
Another video.m4v 8 GB 2 minutes
If you somehow convert it to a project, the project size would be about this:
Name Size
A video.sb3 8.69 GB
Another video.sb3 59.32 MB
(assuming compression rate is 1:1, no project.json and no file header in pictures)

GIF's don't have enough color to make “good” pictures. For example, here's a GIF of an animation that I converted from an animation at Wikipedia:
The same animation, now on an lesser known APNG would look like this:
Notice that the reflection of the ball disappear. That's because GIF's don't support alpha channel transparency, it's either colored, or transparent, no in-between. The ball's gradient also becomes a bit noisy, because GIF's don't have the colors to make smooth gradients. In a more extreme case it could even look something like this:

1. Scratch is for programming, it is not youtube.

And so? It could just be another asset for programming no problem.
I agree, if it would apply to backdrops, i wouldn't need to convert the file to over 50 .png files!

It will be nice if scratch can automatically convert mp4 to gif to take up less space, but not really necessary

The limit would be extremely small otherwise poor Scratch will crash.

Anyway, I’m not too big a fan of this suggestion.

To upload “Videos” I just convert the video to a gif, and grab the audio, and then play them side by side. That takes up a lot less space then having to store audio and video on one file.

Again, quality.
Also, that has no advantage on space since the frames will be converted to png anyway.

It can be useful. I just hope scratchers don’t post YouTube videos converted in gifs for make some “funny memes”. Everything has bad consequences.

In the same way an animation can do.

I don't see any point in this. This is just wasting space.
In fact, A 20-second video 480p 60fps is calculated by me, 622.08 MB

You could

when green flag clicked
broadcast [gif v]
when green flag clicked
play sound [ v] until done

Scratch has a limit on how much MB there can be on a project. I think the max is 10 MB.

Hey you yes you. Have you ever heard of something called a mp3 or a wav file. You could just add the sound to scratch and upload the gif also to scratch.
