Why I believe that this update is bad:

1. Taking the follow numbers away from the profile page does nothing. Well, it does do something. It annoys me because I have to load one more page just to check more followers. This means that I'll hardly know when somebody unfollows me. I like to know if that happens because I don't want to be advertising something to repeatedly and annoying people, being too active… etc. However, about the people who are obsessed with followers, how will that discourage them? If they have enough time to spam several hundred people with follow requests, how is clicking one little button going to get them to stop? And taking the numbers away doesn't mean that they don't want followers any more.

2. I like to keep track of everything on my profile and projects so that I know what people like, what types of projects encourage what types of activity, and so on. For example, I can tell you that my Updates project got quite a number of random comments on my profile, love its on my other projects, and not many love its for itself (compared to my other things of course). Now I know that disguising a game as an Updates project is a terrible marketing ploy. If there were no numbers, then how would I know not to do that again?

3. When you visit a profile, you usually have no idea how good or bad a user is at Scratch. Should you check out their projects? Should you not? Is the user just getting all of their thumbnails from another user that makes them look better at Scratch? Well, to determine this, many Scratchers look at the number of followers. If there are a lot of followers in a short amount of time, then you know that it's probably worth checking out their projects! I usually will compare the number of followers to the joined date so that I know if the given Scratcher is something new in the world of Scratch. I'm not saying that it's not worth checking out projects if the user doesn't have many followers, but I subconsciously do this a lot and it's really annoying if I need to click twice more to do this! That's a big waste of time! (Thanks to other Scratchers for reminding me of this).

4. In a matter of minutes, I've several Scratchers have all gotten annoyed at this change. They are also some reputable Scratchers, such as: VoltageGames, WILL_WAM, ELSA_THE_CONQUEROR, -Flash-, TheAnimationShow… need I continue?

Edit: List of more annoyed Scratchers: Flygon12345678, -Because_Im_Batman-, PRETTY_GIRL, dinocatmeow, SnowKittyartist, helloyowazzup, BLACKSWIFT, THEGENERALESS, aminameow4, GetWithTheProgram, MTCRAFTER, RED-drag0n, Lilry1, austin360, SUPERDOGGY, SIFEF, sophielymes527, Fox16, HAnthony, AQUAFLAME, -THEDOCTOR-, GRANNYCOOKIES, andrewjl, tiny288, KJEKJE, Infinity-, Eugenbross, gcenac, TheMistyPuppy2000, DARKCRYSTALBALL, Epicness123, JETPAC, flexaxu, __–Programmer–__…

Now, how many Scratchers are there? How many don't like this? I'm going to let you count and see how annoying that is.

As a simple note, Scratchers in all capitals are well known Scratchers who have worked hard for their popularity. They are all annoyed at you right now. Is this what you wanted?

Please revert this change.

-Scratchifier and many more-

If people do this, then scratchers like me will never get attention.
What do you mean?

Like, if someone doesn't have any followers, like me, then, that person will never get attention.
You still don't have any followers. And people with no followers do get attention. At one point in history, we all didn't have any followers.

I know, but, we wouldn't get any if everyone thought like Scratchifier did.

How about I go to bed? It's 9:55!
Yes we would.

No we won't.

If people judge people by their followers, then, if someone doesn't have followers, then he/she won't get attention, because the person viewing will decide, just because of his/her's followers, that he/she isn't good.
@Scratchifier, Why am I not in bold font. I worked VERY HARD to get the 200+ followers I earned!

In my opinion this is a good argument WHY the follower numbers should be/stay removed. If my projects get less viewed just because I don't have many followers then I would prefer not to have this number shown to visitors openly on the project page.
Maybe you need to make better projects, that might help more than removing the follower numbers.
No, because nobody will look at them because of a low follower count.
That's not true.
Well then why do you want the follower count back?

Yes! This is what I've been waiting for. Updates like these make Scratch a friendlier place.

Although I do see why it has sparked quite a bit of controversy.

Sadly, doesn't look like this'll be changed anytime soon, so I think we should do something along the lines of what Scratchifier is doing – putting the comment number at the end of every post on their profile.

The problem is, this requires anybody who hadn't known their number when it changed to count all of their comments. ):

It's nothing personal. If you check out the bolded people, they are all very well-known.

I also took the number of people that you are following into consideration.

Updates to Following and Followers

speakvisually wrote:

Hey everyone,

You might notice your profile page looks a little bit different. Profile pages no longer display the number of Followers and Following. (You can still view this information by clicking the ‘View All’ button on the Followers / Following panel.) The number of profile comments are no longer displayed too.

Why do this? We want to make sure people see someone’s projects, studios, and connections and not focus too much on the numbers. After all, it doesn’t matter if you have 10 followers or 10,000. Scratch is a place for creating, collaborating, and supporting fellow Scratchers.

The Scratch Mentors put together an awesome remix project about “What is the meaning of followers?” http://scratch.mit.edu.ezproxyberklee.flo.org/projects/25999074/ Check it out and see how other Scratchers think about followers! Feel free to share your thoughts too!

I liked when you can see the amount of comments you have, that way it would be easier to check how many comments you have. Not trying to be famous, doe. (There is no famous )

I understand that the Scratch Team wants scratch to be dedicated to making projects rather than wanting follows. However, I believe that taking away a number at the side of a heading doesn't prove anything. After all, like you said, people can still view all of your followers by clicking “View all”. Also, if the scratch community starts focusing more on making projects rather than fame, would you please consider adding back the number of follows, projects in studios and comments? Thanks!

It is okay. I am not asking you to change your opinions, at all. I am sorry if I seamed rude, it wasn't my intention.
Please understand, I'll try to be more understanding toward you.
Will all of you try to do that too? I was also in not a great mood when I typed that, so I apologize, I just hate seeing such big discussions. Let us all try to be more understanding toward different opinions.

Updates to Following and Followers

I disagree with this update.

Why?
I think the problem is not that Scratchers care about the numbers, it's that many don't understand their value.
When I'm having a bad day, or when I feel worthless. Scratch is always there. And one of the things that gets me motivated is the followers. I can glance at my profile and say to myself “I have 42 people that look up to me and value me. They like my coding/personality/whatever to literally stalk me. They want to see what I do and who I am. That's how much I mean to them.”

I think hiding the follower number is going to change very little. Mostly people are just going to get annoyed. Instead, spread the word. Maybe put something next to your follower number, when you hover over it saying. “wow! you have lots of people who care and admire you!”, “remember: it's only a number.” or other positive messages. Maybe tell scratchers about this.

Will this stop f4f?
No.
Many people who f4f don't do it for the numbers. They do it so other people will check out their stuff. It's a general human desire to be recognized. Stopping it is impossible.

Are we disabling the love and fav numbers next?
We want to make sure people see someone’s projects, studios, and connections and not focus too much on the numbers.
It is the same for fav/love numbers. A project isn't “bad” if it has little support. A project isn't “good” if it has much support. People might see low numbers and think “oh no! no one cares about my project! I'm terrible!” but this will happen for everything. People need to understand that the numbers are not a true value. Hiding numbers won't change that.

Spreading the word will.

And yet these numbers have value.

Every scratcher dreams/remembers the day they hit 100 followers.
Or get top-loved.
Or featured.
We use these numbers as an accomplishment, a mark of achieving something grand.

Are we disabling years on scratch next?
We want to make sure people see someone’s projects, studios, and connections and not focus too much on the numbers.
It is the same for year numbers. Quality projects, studios, and connections do not come directly from time on the site. But people see high year numbers and think “oh no! I've been here for so long and no one sees my stuff! I'm terrible!” but again, this is something to be understood not to be hidden. How can we solve this?

Spreading the word.

Are we disabling view numbers next?
Are we disabling message numbers next?
Are we disabling forum post numbers next?
Are we disabling all comment numbers next?
Are we disabling all studio numbers next?
Are we disabling every number on this site next?

The answer, I hope not.
I hope not.
