Ban Memes/Phrases/Etc Intended To Mock/Make Fun Of Disabled People
I've been seeing a lot of projects and comments lately where people say “reeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee”, and that term was created to make fun of a boy who had autism and made that sound when he was angry. I think this is very offensive to people on the spectrum (like myself) and any memes along these lines should be banned. As autism, and other disorders, have been getting a lot of stigma lately I think scratch should do something about it, just to raise awareness and get people to stop improperly using words related to mental disorders or illnesses. Even knowledge about how it's bad can help stop it.
I feel with the growing mental health problems in the modern world, Scratch should try to stop improper usage of words like “triggered”, as it gives people with said disorders a bad name. There's enough articles online explaining why using the word triggered as a meme is offensive, so I won't say anything for the sake of redundancy,
I don't mean people who used offensive terms without knowing they were offensive should be banned, I mean that using them with the intention of making fun of people shouldn't be allowed.
A way to prevent impropper usage of these words would be making a public announcement similar to the Black Lives Matter one they made recently (I'm glad the ST did that, by the way). People with autism or any other disorder have been bullied, harrassed, and even neglected basic human rights just because of their disorder, and all the improper usage of the words or offensive depictions of disorders are both harmful for people with the disorders, and harmful for the generall community as people picture someone with autism as the loud annoying person they saw on an “autistic screeching” meme.
I'm sorry if I am hard to understand, I'm a bit stressed right now and I am having trouble seeing clearly and I probabl;ym made a lot of typos here..
but tldr
scratch should make a publi8c announcement about why triggered, and anything along those lines, memes are harmful and request for them to stop and make it be part of the community guidelines. heck the community guidelines say scratch “welcomes people of all ages, races, ethnicities, religions, abilities, sexual orientations, and gender identities.”, and by allowing these offensive jokes they are technically breaking scratch's goal.

There's information on it on the Know Your Meme website.
Certain frog species are known to produce a shrill scream noise to ward of predators when threatened. On October 25th, 2009, the earliest known video of this behavior was uploaded by YouTuber ppparaone, which gained over 2.5 million views and 4,600 comments in the next six years (shown below). This video would later one become even more popular with a screenshot of a comment, and spread to humor content aggregator clickbait websites such as Buzzfeed or Smosh. That's the entirety of the Origin section.

I've genuinely used “reeeeeee” myself (to express emotions along the lines of “hecc”) and honestly don't see how it could be offensive to people with mental disabilities. I think it's okay to use as long as you aren't using it to make fun of people who have autism.

The expression is often associated with the Autistic Screeching meme
On February 21st, a Redditor submitted the question “Why do people on 4chan's r9k say ‘REEEEEE’ all of a sudden?” to the /r/OutOfTheLoop subreddit, to which Redditor Dragon___ replied that the sound was similar to shrieks made by autistic people (shown below). On March 19th, Redditor Taaqif submitted another question about “Reeeeeee” comments to /r/OutOfTheLoop.right after that last part, there was an image of said redditor saying they become autistic and also used a slur against disabled people which I refuse to say on here.
It's also used in association with normies, and sometimes normie is used to attack people who are disabled as apparently they're more of a “normie” or something like that… idk
the autistic screeching page explains the sorry excuse for a “meme” more. The problem isn't as much the meme, the problem is it includes the word “autistic” when they could have just said “aggressive” or “intense” or any other similar word instead.

That's not even the complete sentence. It ends with “however it is intended to represent the unique croak produced by several species of frogs when agitated.” It also saysThe expression is often associated with the Autistic Screeching meme

If it's being used to purposely make fun of disabled people, then isn't it already banned?
If you see any comments or posts doing this, report them. For more complicated situations, use contact us. I don't think the Scratch Team needs to make an entire announcement saying not to make fun of disabled people - especially when that's common sense and obviously not allowed.

the meme isn't intended to make fun of disabled people its just that some insensitive people (mainly 4channers) decide to relate it to disabled people because, well, they are 4channers. we all know what 4channers act like.

I agree with Red, these statements can be reportable and some of these memes sometimes are not directed to the disabled. We don't need to make a ban if it's already not allowed. If it's being used to purposely make fun of disabled people, then isn't it already banned?

I thought “triggered” was a common phrase to not worry about. I've used it as joke in the past.
But yeah, quoting
I'm tired of “autistic” being used in the connotation of “stupid” or “rude”.

But it is generally against people who have autism, even if you aren't trying to be mean towards them, it is still offensive, whether you are aware of that or not I've genuinely used “reeeeeee” myself (to express emotions along the lines of “hecc”) and honestly don't see how it could be offensive to people with mental disabilities. I totally understand where you are coming from here, but the thing is that words and phrases can have different meaning and intentions, as well as change throughout time. Take the word “Gay” for example- It was originally an insult. Now it's a commonly used word, even by the LGBTQ+ community. It went from slur to a perfectly fine word.
I think this should really be a matter of what is meant, rather than the worst possible thing it could mean. I'd say that the majority of people who say “reeee” and “triggered” mean it in a completely harmless way, and I don't see the point of banning something if it's not being used inappropriately or disrespectfully.

Yes but still, if disabled people see it, they can be offended, it is better not having people offended even if they didn't mean to offend anyone
