Okay, a lot of people post Scratch Blocks related to the topic for example

Scratcher1 says:

Bring back the cat blocks pls!

So Scratcher2 quotes him with a script that says “When Green Flag Clicked” “Say (Cat Blocks are cute! Bring them back!)”

And Scratcher3 says that Scratcher2 is block spamming and he quotes Scratcher2 with

DO NOT BLOCKSPAM, SCRATCHER2! I'LL REPORT U!

and he reports Scratcher2's post


NOTE: These quotes are invented by me. This isn't a real topic, but it's similar to one.
But how are some short scripts related to the topic considered block spam?
Are they really block spam? If yes, why did the Scratch Team put the Scratch Block Plugin?

Well, scratchblocks were made to be used to help with scripts, not things that can easily be said in normal text. Also scratchblocks are DENSE. IT takes a lot of space to fit them, and in large quantities it can be spammy and annoying.

Dude, I just wrote that Scratcher2 used 2 blocks. Also, they're just cute. Why can't people say simply “Hi” with the Scratch Block plugin to make it nice without getting reported?

Scratch blocks exist so that you can explain scripts. For example, if you want a script about how to move a sprite to the mouse in a topic, do this:

when green flag clicked
forever
go to [mouse pointer v]
end

Some people use them not as scripts, but to display a message. It's unnecessary, as they can just type it out. Scratch blocks take up large amounts of space in large quantities. So, if you were doing:

when green flag clicked
forever
broadcast [cat block v]
end

when I receive [cat block v]
say [YAY] for (infinite) secs

That's not necessary. You can just type, “I'm happy about the cat blocks.” See how much space it took up? Moreover, it's a form of spamming, and is not allowed.

If we allowed people to use small amounts of blockspamming, it would be hard to define the limits on how much blockspamming would be allowed. Either way, they're unnecessary to be used if not using to describe code.

Yes, but I mean that I think the question itself is referring to how I've been constantly seeing blockspamming and politely asking them to stop. (Maybe not, who knows?)

The point of Scratch blocks is to demonstrate how a script works, usually in Help with Scripts. Blocks take up server space and, if we told others blockspamming is ok, people would still use it to post off-topic things.

For example the topic is ‘Why is Scratch have a forum????’

And a newbie goes and does this:

when green flag clicked
set pen color to (rainbow!!)
rest for (drummo) beats
hide
ask [r u alive] and wait
show

If people say it's ok then that will happen more often. I've seen people do it already.

The culture in the forums is much different than in the comment section; we want answers and discussion to be concise and meaningful, and unfortunately speaking in scratchblocks - even when related to the topic - does not fit that vision. It's for this same reason the forums are strict about necroposts, typing in ALL CAPS, or getting off-topic; its simply not what the Questions About Scratch forum is for.

Well, still. “You can blockspam but only if it is 1 or 2 blocks and related to the topic” is so much more confusing than “Don't blockspam, you can only use the Scratch blocks if you are trying to help someone with a script” The latter is what is in place, the former is what you are asking for. People already blockspam enough, if this was what the rule was, the amount of blockspams would increase exponentially.

In the past we've considered the fact that some “blockspam” is okay as a sort of font choice when it's clearly not being used to spam. A post such as

Why did they remove the cat blocks?

is okay, since the script is short and somewhat relevant to the rest of the topic. A topic such as

when green flag clicked
ask [Why were cat blocks removed?] and wait

is okay, since technically they are asking a question, and again, the script is short. A good example of “blockspam” that is not okay is the following:

forever
forever
forever
forever
forever

end
end
end
end
end

when this sprite clicked
say [i like pizza]
think [yummyyyyyyyyyyy]

and so on. This isn't all that short, and isn't really relevant to anything. This one would be considered blockspam.

So, to answer your question, despite what others have stated, a little bit of “blockspam” is okay. As you stated, “blockspam” is okay if the scripts are short and are related to the topic at hand. (I put “blockspam” in quotes since it's not really spam in this case.) But it's not okay if the scripts are not relevant at all.

And, at the very least, I would discourage others from telling people that they have “blockspammed” in the forums. If it really is spam, just use the Report button and move on.
