Hytale Discussion & Speculation

On December 13th 2018, a trailer for a new game called Hytale was released. Hytale is a voxel-based adventure/creative game being developed by Hypixel Studios, the creators of one of the largest and most successful Minecraft server networks. The trailer has since gained over 40 million views, and word continues to spread about this upcoming project.

Immediately after the game was revealed, there was buzz all over the gaming community about what kind of impact Hytale could have on the blockgame genre, with many dubbing it the “Minecraft killer” or even “Minecraft 2.” However, Hytale also has its fair share of skeptics who think it's just another Minecraft clone or otherwise that it's doomed to fail. This topic is dedicated to debating the question of Hytale's success, speculating on different aspects of Hytale, and discussing the latest Hytale news. What are your thoughts?

Honestly, I think Hytale has a lot of potential to be better than Minecraft. MC's in sort of a weird place right now, and Hytale seems to be trying to deliver on a lot of Minecraft's unfulfilled promises. There's a degree of polish on display here that we haven't really seen in the Minecraft-like genre.

Bump

I'll probably keep updating this thread with more Hytale info as it comes out, in the hopes of generating some interest. This really is a fascinating game, well worth talking about. I highly recommend taking a look at the blog posts on their website

The modeling software looks pretty darn good for a free tool. It looks very intuitive to use and the collaborative features seem like they're fun to mess around with.

However, I think I might be even more interested in something that was just briefly mentioned, namely what they describe as a ‘Google Docs’ for game asset management. Depending on how available and well-maintained that service is going to be, it could be huge.

You know, the detailed model and texture work is great, and the gameplay/world look cool enough, but I think it's the modding tools which really have the potential to put Hytale over the top. They're designing this game from the ground up to be extensible and customizable at every level, something similar games have tried to achieve for years with limited success.

Minecraft is pretty good about this yet wasn't originally made with modding in mind, while Roblox took a similar approach but has its own issues in terms of limitations and security. Hytale has years of good and bad ideas to look back on and perhaps has unique insight into what the modding community actually wants. They have a real chance at being able to pull this off.

New blog post! This one is about Hytale's server technology.

I'm glad to hear, once again, that they are keeping modding and customizability in mind. It's also cool they're supporting UPnP, that'll be excellent. The server list feature also seems cool, but could possibly be an area of concern as to how bots and spammers and other abusers could interact with that platform. They say the listing will be actively moderated though, so I'm hopeful as to the success of this feature.

More stuff of note: Noxy, Hytale's project lead, tweeted about the comparisons to Minecraft a few days ago:
I wanted to take a moment to address the whole “Minecraft Killer” thing as it relates to Hytale. Simply put - that's not our goal and we reject the title
Hytale is its own thing with its own different set of goals and dreams. Many team members from Mojang and Microsoft have been terrifically supportive of us chasing our own independent ambitions.
You can check out the whole thread here.

Dang it, I've been corrupted. I saw “tale” in the title and thought it was an Undertale AU.

Looks way better than Minecraft based on the gameplay shown, but the art style is very ugly.

Yeah, comparing what we've seen of Hytale gameplay with the way MC has been for years is just totally insane.

I think the artstyle looks pretty nice overall, but the human designs are a liiitle iffy…

They look like characters you see in Minecraft animations on YouTube, like that old Fallen Kingdom thing. I wonder if that's what they're going for?

I hope not. Luckily, the game has a first-person mode.

Latest Hytale blog post talks about the different ways blocks work ingame. It elaborates on features such as block colors, transitional textures, animation states, and procedural animations. We also get to see some longer clips of WIP gameplay, which is exciting

Small detail I noticed rereading this blog post: the mention of “levers” near the end of the article. People have been wondering if Hytale will include something similar to redstone, could the inclusion of levers be indicative of such a system?
