If you didn't know what an axolotl is (sometimes known as a Mexican Walking Fish or Mexican Salamander, also given the nickname “axie”), it's a type of salamander. It is neotenic, meaning it reaches maturity without going through metamorphosis, unlike most salamanders. It is also unique in a few other ways, since it can regenerate any part of their body and can even generate extra limbs while regenerating one. They also look quite different from most creatures, with branchy feather-like external gills, lizard-like limbs, and a permanent “smile”. They also come in a rainbow of colors, such as leucistic, albino, golden albino, melanoid, blue, wildtype, etc.

I think they're my favorite species of salamander (since I have a few characters that are axolotls), and I want to tell others about them, not just because they're cool, but because they're also endangered.

I've really only seen pictures of them. In the area I live in, it's legal to own an axolotl, but they cost about 30 bucks and I'm not even sure if I can buy one at a normal pet store (I actually went to a pet store the other day and I didn't see any)..
Not to mention that I'm not all that good at caring for sea creatures..

As a random fun fact, I did make a character loosely based off Dr. Shrunk from Animal Crossing.. who is in turn an axolotl and is somewhat skilled with medical terms.
(The character I've made is actually named Max Lottle, so his name kinda sounds like “axolotl”, in turn he has a sister named Axel Lottle.)

The first time I heard about them was a 2010 Halloween issue of National Geographic Kids magazine. There was an article about axolotls and how they compare to famous movie monsters, such as the werewolf (being quite docile until provoked, then suddenly turning aggressive), the alien (their appearance), Frankenstein's Monster (the ability to regenerate body parts), the body snatchers (the invasive species that are taking over their habitat), and the vampire (being somewhat cannibalistic)
I still have that copy of the magazine about 7 years later.

I did some research, and apparently the video is more realistic than I thought. Axolotls are basically salamanders that don't ever metamorphose. However, if given the right hormones carefully, they might change and practically become a salamander. But if they do that, most of the time they get depressed and sometimes stop eating.

Random useless information: I was doing a project in school about axolotls and ended up getting a good grade..
