At long last, we're ready to release Scratch 2.0! It will take a while to update everything, so both the old and new Scratch websites will be closed for 3 days, on May 6, 7, 8 . On May 9, beta.scratch.mit.edu will become scratch.mit.edu. So we’ll see you on scratch.mit.edu on May 9!

Here are 5 things to know about the transition to 2.0!

Many thanks to all the beta testers who have given us helpful and constructive feedback!

Hi, this looks fantastic!

I found that new version 2 works extremely slowly in my computer (Windows Vista, IE 9) like there is about a second lag from when I click on an arrow down to see the drop-down menu. Also, when I drag a block, it goes so slow that it is difficult to place it right under the previous block.

I wonder if there is going to be a downlod version? I was trying to get a class going in my daughter's school but some classrooms have no internet connection, does this mean that we have to stay with version 1.4?

Aside of these two things, I found v.2 good and glad to see “functions” and the “clone” feature.

Thanks guys!
They are planning to release a downloadable version in the summer (Northern Hemisphere).

Perhaps your computer is just all-around slow. Vista and IE is a bad combo.

I had a really old windows 2000
When you click somewhere it takes a few minutes to load
The worst is turning it on, that takes ages

AWESOME!!!!!! However, there are still all those wrinkles in the code to sort out… Are you sure you're not rushing to satisfy an impatient Scratch Community? Then again, the Scratch Team knows, so everything will be fine.

There certainly are still plenty of wrinkles, and additional features, and lots of stuff to do! But switching to a single site will save us precious time and energy that we can devote to fixing things faster. (We've been running and maintaining two sites since January!) It will take us a few months to iron things out - during which we hope Scratchers will be patient!

Yes! We'll release a downloadable version in the Summer. We haven't heard of this slow response issue when running Vista, IE 9. Would it be possible for you to try a different browser, like Firefox, and let us know how it's going, just so we know if the performance problem is browser releted?

Actually, it'll need a lot of testing - probably we'll release an alpha first that people can try out a little.

An alpha after a beta? After an official release?

Sorry if this is taken as disrespectful. No disrespect is meant. Could you explain further?

Edit: Oh, I get it. This is like forcing people to try out the beta, basically.

With long scripts, it lags on XP, Chrome, Firefox, 7, Chrome, Firefox, and Mac OS X, Chrome, Firefox, Safari.

Awesome! Will SDS integration be ready in time for the release?

Sadly, it may not - we still have a lot of work to do just makin' sure it's ready for all the traffic! But it's first on the list after things cool off. Think of it as a brief well-earned vacation for the awesome SDS curators, like you!
Thanks. Can't wait for 2.0!
