A Change To "Not For Everyone" Projects (About 20+ supporters)
Hello everyone, and I’d like to introduce my suggestion to you.
To sum up this post, I know projects need to be suitable for all ages but a project with Tom and Jerry cartoon violence or totally unrealistic sword fighting against unrealistic pixelated fantasy creatures is not violent enough to be deemed unsuitable for the community.
On Scratch, if a project contains virtually no violence or similar content (in most cases, this is violence, because content such as drugs or swearing wouldn’t be allowed at all) it will be marked “For Everyone” (FE) and will not have any restrictions placed on it.
If a project contains relatively minor non-graphic violence (or similar content) but is still appropriate to be on the Scratch website it gets marked “Not for Everyone” (NFE) and has restrictions placed on it, so it cannot be front paged and will be hidden from the search results.
What I would like to suggest to be changed, is that projects that contain only very mild, non-graphic violence (such as a cartoony pixelated game where the character fights monsters with a sword) should not have the Not For Everyone status.
Before you stop reading and say “No Support” I will explain why.
Scratch is for ages 8 and up, so it goes without saying that projects should be suitable for 8 year olds.
Here in the UK, there is a rating system called PEGI that rates games for what age they are suitable for. There are ratings 3, 7, 12, 16 and 18 and a game with each rating is suitable for that age and up.
If a game would be rated 7+ by PEGI, it may contain some minor violence but nothing that would not be appropriate for the Scratch website.
Scratch is 8+ so I know that bloody shooting games and direct emulations of FNAF would not be allowed.
But I really don’t see any harm in a 7+ game being front paged because Scratch is for ages 8+ but although Scratch is intended to be generally suitable for all ages, it doesn’t have to pander to 3 year olds and their parents.

Too Long; Didn’t Read:
Projects that would be rated 3+ should be For Everyone
Projects that would be rated 7+ should be For Everyone but maybe have a message that the project is more suitable for 8+ (8+ because Scratch is for 8+) because violence in 7+ games is generally not enough to deem it “inappropriate for the community” and violence in 7+ projects is generally very mild.
Projects that are more than 7+ should be Not For Everyone
Projects that are inappropriate for the site should be removed.
I know the Scratch Team isn’t a ratings board, but basically “7+ projects” here refer to projects that are suitable for the community but contain only very mild violence which isn’t enough to make it NFE.

The problem I have with this suggestion is the fact that Scratch is American and America uses ESRB. /s
Legit tho, Indifferent. I think the system is fine as it is.

E is equivalent to 3+ and 7+ is slightly less than E10+.

I think this would be a very good idea, personally, so support from me – but I believe this might have been turned down before? I know it was suggested previously and wasn't met with a lot of favor from the ST and some of the other Scratchers.

All I'm saying is that the Not For Everyone rating should not be applied to projects with only minor violence.

Why did they turn it down? Scratch is for 8+ not toddler+ so a little bit of unrealistic, minor fighting shouldn't be enough for a NFE…
But projects with more than that can be NFE. It depends how much violence there is.

According to the Scratch rules, everything must be appropriate for all ages.

No support. The Community Guidelines say "Scratch welcomes people of all ages, races, ethnicities, religions, sexual orientations, and gender identities.".

I thought there was a rule where you couldn't make any “bad” content. I disagree with the rule, but I am surprised to see exceptions to it.

The majorty and target audience of Scratch is 8-16 year olds. So while Scatch does welcome all ages it shouldn't have to pander to please toddlers at the expense of everyone else! No Support because GuidelinesCOMPLEATE, ABSOLUTE AND TOTALL SUPPORT!

My main point is that projects with very minor violence are not bad enough to not be appropriate for 8 year olds.

I agree with this, since minor violence is not enough to have it partially censored (i.e. NFE)

/sScratch welcomes all countries and races, though. The problem I have with this suggestion is the fact that Scratch is American and America uses ESRB.
For this idea my opinion is neutral (for now.) I'm sick today and don't feel like looking up PEGI.
