Alt codes

Just a topic, post your favorite alt code here!
(hold down alt, put in numbers on number pad, release alt, there's your alt symbol)

(note: They appear quite small, so put them in big. Click the blue A above the text box.)

Try the normal numbers above the letters then, or go to an alt code list that provides examples and copy and paste

It only works with the number pad and I think num-lock has to be on. You can also use Character Map to copy characters and get alt codes for some of them.

If you have OS X Mavericks (10.9) you can press ⌃⌘Space to quickly get emoji icons and other symbols.

Alt codes

I dislike it when people label these as “alt codes”. The term is actually correct when used to describe the actual input of the numbers, but the character corresponding to the number is the glyph at index N of the currently used charset. Thus, we are discussing the input of characters in the non-Latin ranges of Unicode via their index number in charset X, which is just a limited form of discussing the non-Latin Unicode ranges and their indexes in general. Or, if you want, you can generalize it even more and say that all forms of glyphs and their indexes are a part of typographical study (which they are), and belong in the typography topic.

*ends rant*

666 is Ü, which looks like the emoticon “C:”

Alt codes

Hi Derek1337, the “Reading and Playing” forum is to talk about media you're reading or playing about, like books, TV shows, games, or newspaper articles (to name a few). Alt codes doesn't exactly seem like a topic a person is reading or playing about. Maybe you could share a discussion about alt codes another way, like in a survey Scratch project with cloud variable asking users which alt code is their favorite.
